3NC project: Normandy and Nuclear: New Skills

Prepare the future of the nuclear industry in Normandy

The 3NC project is the winner of the Call for Expression of Interest (EOI), Skills and Jobs of the future for the small modular reactors roadmap. As such, 3NC benefits from a 42 million euros financing, funded by the France 2030 investment plan implemented by the State and managed by the Deposits and Consignments Fund..

This project, led by the Normandy region, aims at meeting the needs of the entirety of the nuclear section careers.

A consortium dedicated to nuclear excellence

Directed by the Normandy region, 3NC gathers a large range of academical, industrial and institutional partners, such as:

  • Research laboratories and higher education institutions: university of Caen, INSA Rouen Normandie, ENSICAEN, university of Rouen, university of le Havre, ISEL, YNCREA, BUILDERS, CESI, ESIGELEC, GANIL,
  • First plan industrial actors such as EDF, Orano, and Enedis,
  • Institutions dedicated to training and career choice such as the AgenceRégionale de l’Orientation et des Métiers(Regional agency of career choice and jobs), CMQe CEINE, University of Nuclear Careers, FRTP

This partnership aims at making Normandy a centre of excellence in nuclear careers, by responding to strategic stakes such as trainings’ attractivity, and skills development.

The University of Caen Normandy at the centre of the project

The University of Caen Normandy, as a partner, benefits from a financing that aims at facilitating the implementation of 2 topics which the university coordinates:

  • Increase the number of students and courses specialised in nuclear
  • Encourage excellence, exchange, and professional integration

The financing will bring many resources which will be used for educational purposes (integration of virtual reality in teaching, educational equipment and techniques dedicated to the technological hall which will be located on Campus 2…).

A diversified and appropriate offer of programmes

Multiple faculties and schools of the University of Caen Normandy are involved in this project (IUT Grand Ouest Normandie, Sciences Faculty, ESIX Normandie) through the following programmes:

The University of Caen Normandy also trains doctors in nuclear physics, within the doctoral school in Physics, engineering sciences, materials, energy (PSIME).

The Qualification-based programme for Radiation Protection Officers (RPOs) is offered to professionals of the sector for the entirety of the Grand-Ouest Region in France (Brittany, Normandy and the Loire Valley) with 3 levels of formation:

  • Inter-university diploma Working in a Nuclear Environment
  • Inter-university diploma Working in the Nuclear Sector

The University of Caen Normandy will also rely on the Graduate School N2P and the Graduate School Materials & Energy Sciences as a springboard towards fundamental and applied research doctorate specialisations.
